Wildcats complete perfect trip to Arizona
Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Nick Fisher (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) smashed a home run and doubled to drive in four of Linfield's 16 runs and five Wildcats combined for a shutout against Whitter in the finale of the season-opening Arizona Desert Classic Sunday afternoon at Sandra Day O'Conner High School.

Fisher was one of six multiple-hit players for top-ranked Linfield, which improved to 4-0 while dealing the Poets their sixth straight loss to open the year.

Corey VanDomelen (Jr., Tigard, Ore.) sparked the Wildcat offense in the top of the first with a leadoff single, and Fisher brought him home in the very next at-bat with a shot over the left-field fence. Jake Wylie (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) and Clayton Truex (Sr., Kirkland, Wash.) followed up with back-to-back doubles, and by the time the Whittier defense finally got off the field, Linfield had gone through its entire lineup and sported a 5-0 lead.

After VanDomelen tripled and came home on Wylie's sacrifice fly and Joe Perryman (So., Kalama, Wash.) sat down three of four batters faced in the bottom of the third, the ‘Cats really poured it on, scoring seven times in the top of the third to put the game away.

Kramer Lindell (Sr., West Linn, Ore.) started and finished the inning with doubles, Fisher added a third and the Wildcats benefitted from three Whittier defensive errors to push their advantage to 13 runs.

Linfield scored three more times before all was said and done, including twice in the eighth off an RBI single from Kekoa Kaulukukui (So., Aiea, Hawaii) and VanDomelen's sacrifice fly.

Defensively, the Wildcats surrendered just four hits on the afternoon. Jonathan Whipple managed two singles, Curtis Martin contributed another and Stephen Zavala supplied the only multiple-base hit, a double in the first.

Making his first career varsity start, Perryman threw six strikeouts in four innings to record the win before handing off to Garrett Miller (Jr., Corvallis, Ore.), who threw two scoreless innings. Spencer Metzsch (Jr., Aloha, Ore.) retired three of four batters in the seventh before Kyle Billeci (Jr., Aloha, Ore.) and Garett Speyer (Sr., Vancouver, Wash.) finished the day with one hitless frame apiece.

Fisher finished the day 2-for-3 with four RBI while Truex and Kaulukukui combined for six more RBI.

UP NEXT: Linfield returns to the Pacific Northwest for a home-and-home series against Western Oregon. The Wildcats and Wolves first face off Saturday in Monmouth before heading north to McMinnville Sunday afternoon. Both games begin at noon.
