Longtime Linfield College Athletics supporter and fan Bert Johnson, Class of 1952, passed away peacefully Jan. 23 at age 83.
A retired school teacher living in Portland, Johnson was an avid follower of the Linfield football, basketball and baseball teams.
He and his wife, Patti ‘54, were football season ticket holders since 1965 and attended countless contests away from Maxwell Field as well.
In addition to being season ticket holders, the Johnsons, along with good friend Denny Morlan '52, held the distinction of witnessing in person the Linfield football team win all four of its national championships.
“On the rare occasion when Linfield would lose a football game, you couldn't talk to Bert for two weeks,” said Morlan, who shared a dorm room with Johnson. “A few years back, after watching Linfield on the videocast blow a 20-point lead and lose to Cal Lutheran, Bert and Patti were so devastated they just got up from the table at our house and walked out the door without saying a word.”
Mr. Johnson attended Linfield for three years, was drafted and spent two years the U.S. Army, then returned to Oregon where he completed his bachelor's degree at Lewis & Clark. While raising four daughters, he taught seventh and eighth grade in southwest Portland.
He is survived by Patti, his wife of 62 years, and four daughters, Tina '75, Lisa, Tess, and Tricia '83, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
In honor of Bert's passion for Linfield athletics, the family requests that gifts in Bert's memory be sent to Linfield College, c/o Institutional Advancement, 900 S.E. Baker St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
