For the third time in six years, Linfield College has been selected to serve as host site for one of eight NCAA Division III regional playoff tournaments.
The multi-team regional tournament is scheduled for May 14-18 at Linfield's Jim Wright Stadium at Roy Helser Field. The winner of the double-elimination playoff tournament earns one of eight coveted spots in the NCAA Finals, May 23-27, in Appleton, Wis.
“I'm very excited we are able to bring the NCAA baseball regional back to Linfield and McMinnville,” said Linfield director of athletics Scott Carnahan, who also serves as Linfield's pitching coach. “I believe Roy Helser Field and Jim Wright Stadium provide an excellent facility at which to host a tournament. It will be exciting baseball as the West Regional always features several nationally ranked teams and the Division III fan base in our area continues to be very engaged.”
Linfield previously hosted the NCAA regional tournament in 2010 and 2011. The defending Division III national champion Wildcats are coming off a record-setting 42-8 season that included an 8-2 run through the postseason. Linfield competed in the regional playoffs last spring at Concordia-Texas before advancing to Appleton for the Finals. The Wildcats did not qualify for the playoffs in 2012.
With all Division III playoff sites determined in advance by the NCAA, the regional tournament will be staged in McMinnville regardless of whether Linfield's baseball team is competing. The Wildcats still must earn an invitation, either by means of the automatic berth awarded to the Northwest Conference champion, or as an at-large representative.
