SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Using an early season trip to California as a means to shape its identity, Linfield split a pair of contests Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Winter Tournament hosted at the new Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Linfield 60, CalTech 54
Mason Rodby (So., Redmond, Ore.) hit 8 of 9 shots from the field to finish with a team-high 17 points and Tanner Brill netted a dozen points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers while pacing Linfield to a win over CalTech.
The Wildcats opened up a 32-22 halftime advantage and fended off a late surge to square their season record at 2-2.
Shooting 46 percent from the field and forcing 20 turnovers, Linfield put together its best performance of the season.
Ryan Cali (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) snatched five rebounds and passed out five assists, but the freshman guard struggled from the field, going 0 for 4.
Bryan Joel scored 20 points and Lawrence Lee added 1 for the Beavers.
UC-Santa Cruz 76, Linfield 67
Three Wildcats reached double figures in scoring on a night went Linfield shooters canned 10 3-pointers.
Cali pumped in 17 points while Jackson Gion and Ryan Potter (So., Molalla, Ore.) each added 11 points.
The Banana Slugs outrebounded the Wildcats 35-29 and shot 50 percent from the field to Linfield's 42.
The game was close through the first 15 minutes before UC-Santa Cruz closed the first half with 9-3 burst. Leading 34-26 at intermission, the Slugs eventually built their lead to as many as 20, 60-40, with just under 10 minutes to play. Linfield closed the gap to seven points in the final minute on a 3-pointer by Potter.
