Gabrielsen back in Cardinal and Purple

Former Linfield tennis player and assistant coach Wes Gabrielsen returns to his alma mater as associate head coach under new head coach Lisa Macy-Baker.

Before following Macy-Baker to Linfield, Gabrielsen led the McMinnville High School boys tennis program for four seasons. As the Grizzlies’ varsity head coach, he assembled a 53-14-1 overall record, including a school-record 16 wins in 2013.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with college athletes again,” said Gabrielsen. “This was the perfect time to make a transition to the college level after completing four great years running the MHS boys program.”

With Gabrielsen leading the way, MHS student-athletes qualified for the OSAA Class 6A state tournament each of his four seasons. In all, the Grizzlies won the 2010 Pacific Conference district tournament championship and were runners-up three times.

He previously served for one year as an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Linfield. He also spent four summers as an assistant tennis professional at Salem Tennis and Swim Club in his hometown of Salem, Ore.

Gabrielsen said his coaching style meshes nicely with Macy-Baker’s.

“Lisa and I spent one year coaching side-by-side as she ran the MHS girls team and I coached the boys. Our energy level, passion for tennis and competition, desire to win, and overall coaching philosophies are very similar,” he said. “When she approached me with the opportunity to help run this program, and told me her vision for my role in coaching the program, I immediately took an interest. I know we will be able to fuse our various coaching strengths to help make this a successful program.”

Asking Gabrielsen to come aboard at Linfield was an easy decision for Macy-Baker.

“Wes' experience as a player, student and coach (prior assistant) at Linfield is extremely valuable to our current team and in recruiting prospective student-athletes,” Macy-Baker said. “He understands, first-hand, what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at Linfield. In addition, he brings high-level knowledge of the game and unmatched ability to connect with students.”

A four-year tennis letterman at Linfield, Gabrielsen served as senior team captain in 2008, the same season he was selected as the Northwest Conference Sportsman of the Year.

As a Wildcat, his 15 victories in doubles ranks third all-time for a single season and he stands ninth on the Linfield career singles victories ladder with 34.

“Coaching at my alma mater has always been appealing to me. My experiences at Linfield as a student-athlete helped shape me into the person I am today,” he said. “I gained so many things from my Linfield experience and hope to make a similar impact in the lives of current student-athletes.”

Gabrielsen lettered four times in both tennis and soccer at Sprague High School, where he was a member of the Olympians’ 2004 Valley League championship tennis team as well as two state playoff soccer clubs.

He remains active in the game of tennis, continuing to compete in men's and mixed doubles divisions of the USTA team tennis competition. In 2010, his USTA 10.0 mixed doubles team finished third at the USTA national tournament.

Gabrielsen teaches history at McMinnville High School.
