Fisher hooks NWC weekly honor

After doing his part to help Linfield to four nonconference wins, including three against a Top-25 club, Nick Fisher (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) has been honored as the Northwest Conference Baseball Position Player Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday following a vote of the league’s sports information directors.

Fisher led the Wildcats offensively in California, batting .556 (10-for-18) with four doubles and a team-high eight RBI. He registered at least two hits in every game, including a 4-for-6 performance against La Verne. The junior was also a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts and made 12 putouts against zero errors in the outfield.

Linfield’s right fielder ranks among the top five in the league in six different categories, boasting the second highest slugging percentage (.649) and fourth highest batting average (.421). Fisher also ranks second in stolen bases (14) and doubles (10) and fifth in RBI (330). He has started all 31 games for the ‘Cats, including one start as the team’s designated hitter.

This is the first career weekly honor for Fisher, and the fifth awarded to a Linfield baseball player this spring.

After outscoring then-No. 22 Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne 41-10 over four games, the Wildcats (31-5) were chosen as the No. 1 team in Division III in both polls released Tuesday. Linfield reclaimed the top spot in the poll after a two-week absence, and maintained its standing as the nation’s top club for the fourth straight week in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Top 25.

But more importantly, the ‘Cats remain in contention for the Northwest Conference title. As Linfield went out of conference on its bye week, George Fox took two of three games against Pacific Lutheran to gain a half-game advantage in the team standings. The Wildcats and Bruins face off in a series of monumental importance this weekend in McMinnville, three games that will essentially determine the league championship.

COMING UP: Linfield and George Fox kick off the three-game set with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled for noon.
