McMINNVILLE, Ore – Competing at their home pool, the Linfield men and women swimming teams were unable to pull together enough points to beat the Pacific Lutheran squads Friday evening, with a final score of 120.5-83.5 on the women’s side and 151-53 for the men at the Linfield Aquatic Center.

Though they struggled to beat the Lutes, the Wildcats did have their high moments.

In the 200-yard medley, Wildcats Maggie May, Brandi Halemano (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii), Catherine Nakamura, and Elizabeth Fry (Jr., Bellevue, Idaho) beat out their PLU counterparts by just .12 seconds.

Kelcie Kimura, Tori Nickerson (Sr., Oak Harbor, Wash.), Nikki Overton (Jr., Gresham, Ore.), and Megan Sandall nearly topped the Lutes in the 200-yard freestyle relay, but were edged by the slim margin of .02 seconds.

Individually on the women’s team, Kimura had a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.79), losing to Pacific Lutheran's Hannah Armstrong (1:59.71). Kimura did, however, beat out PLU sophomore Michelle Hogan (56.17) for first place in the 100 freestyle, finishing the race in 54.35 seconds. Wildcat teammate Nickerson rounded out the top three of the latter race with a time of 57.89 seconds.

Linfield’s Sandall tied with Toni Castillo of the Lutes in the 50-yard freestyle, with both scoring a time of 25.93. Halemano and Sandall contributed a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:12.00 and 1:12.23, respectively.

On the men’s side, Pacific Lutheran’s Brian Ruggles placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.06), but was quickly followed by Linfield’s Ian White (Jr., Kailua, Hawaii) at 22.96 seconds. White also finished second in the 100 free with a time of 49.58. First place belonged to Pacific Lutheran’s Chase Mesford (49.41).

Pacific Lutheran swimmers dominated the men’s 400-yard individual medley, except for a fourth-place finish by Miles Phillips with a time of 4:47.85. First place went to Andre Tacuyan (4:31.46).

Sean Iwamasa pulled up second-best in the 100 butterfly (55.71). Pacific Lutheran’s Phil Rempe beat Iwamasa to the wall with a time only 1.68 seconds faster (54.03).

Lee Rivers pulled out the sole men’s victory in the meet. He swam the 500-yard freestyle race in 5:05.33, defeating the Lutes’ Justin Murrell, who finished in 5:09.45.

NEXT: The Wildcats will host their next meet against Puget Sound Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. After a long break, Linfield will host the College of Idaho/Mills on Friday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m.
