Forman and Hyland harass Bearcats, get NWC spotlight

Colin Forman and Brynnan Hyland (Sr., Eugene, Ore.) are this week’s Northwest Conference Football Student-Athletes of the Week for Special Teams and Defense, respectively, in recognition of a couple of standout performances in Linfield’s romp of conference rival Willamette last Saturday. The honors were announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Forman blocked a punt and chased the ball into the end zone for a Wildcat touchdown that doubled their lead over the Bearcats. That single play changed the momentum of the game, allowing Linfield to pull away with an easy victory, 45-10. Forman, a safety, also added three tackles and two pass breakups to end his outstanding day.

Through seven games, Forman leads the Wildcat defensive unit with 22 solo tackles and three interceptions, ranks third in total stops (36) with 3.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. This is Forman’s second NWC weekly honor of the season; he won the first for defense back on Oct. 2.

Hyland terrorized Willamette quarterbacks, recording three sacks for a total loss of 22 yards. In all, he totaled six tackles, including five solo stops. The second-year starter, who was a second team all-NWC pick last season, is the team leader in forced fumbles (2) and sacks (13) as a part of 29 total takedowns.

As a whole, Linfield’s defense slowed down the second-best offense, yardage-wise, in Division III, holding the Bearcats to just 108 yards and 10 points.

Hyland became the second defensive player win the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week award this season, joining Forman. In all, four Wildcats have been recognized by the league for single-game performances during the 2012 season.

With the win over Willamette, the third-ranked Wildcats improved to 7-0 and moved to within one victory of securing their fourth straight conference championship.

NEXT: Linfield can wrap up the NWC title with a win over Puget Sound. Saturday’s kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Baker Stadium.
