Unfazed by rain, Harlow and 'Cats triumph at Michelbook

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – With her father and two brothers cheering her on, Linfield rookie Maggie Harlow (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) picked up her first collegiate win to lead the Wildcats to a dual victory over Corban on a wet Friday afternoon at Michelbook Country Club.

Harlow took the individual title by three strokes, recording a career-low 81, nine over par. She carded a birdie on hole 12 and shot for par or better 10 of 18 holes overall, including a five-hole stretch on the back nine.

“I’ve been working a lot recently on the mental part of the game,” Harlow said. “Today I just tried to be patient with my shots and take it one shot at a time. I wasn’t over-thinking things.”

As a team, Linfield edged the Warriors by 10 strokes, 354-364, to earn their first tournament win of the season.

Sophie Corr posted the day’s second-lowest score, carding a 12-over-par 84. The veteran chipped in for birdie on the 13th hole, a par-4, and shot four over par on the back nine.

Finishing third for the ‘Cats was Brinn Hovde. She recorded a 98 for the single round of play to finish tied for fifth overall.

Erin Heltsley battled the elements to post a career-low score of 107. She suffered the worst of the afternoon’s weather, playing her way through a downpour on the final two holes, but shaved six strokes off her previous best round and recorded her first chip-in to finish ninth.

“There were a lot of strides made today,” said head coach Brynn Hurdus. “It was a little rough with the weather, but they pulled through.

“Mentally, they stayed strong out there. They played better because they were able to get into a rhythm, which hadn’t happened in our first two tournaments.”

AHEAD: The Wildcats compete in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, the first of three major tournaments that determine the conference champion. The two-day fall event is scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28, at the Tri Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield, Wash.
