Dominating pitching performance silences 'Cats

LEWISTON, Idaho – Michael Noteware threw a complete-game shutout, handcuffing Linfield to a season-low three hits as Lewis-Clark State rolled to a 4-0 nonconference victory Friday evening at Harris Field.

Noteware, a junior right-hander, only recorded three strikeouts, but coaxed the Wildcats (21-14) into 12 groundouts and 11 fly outs over nine innings.

The Warriors (38-10) manufactured a single run in the third inning to claim the early advantage. Kyle Knigge got things started with a single to left field. Aaron DeGruire’s sacrifice bunt pushed Knigge over to second, and Mitchell Wilhite drove him home with an RBI single to right field.

Wilhite was also part of Lewis-Clark State’s two-run seventh frame, punching a bases-loaded RBI single through the left side to score Billy Silvestri, who had drawn a walk to open the inning.

The Warriors, the ninth-ranked team in NAIA, tacked on one more run in the eighth, capitalizing on spotty fielding by the 'Cats that allowed the first two batters to get on base.

Tim Wilson, Jake Wylie (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) and Kenny Johnson (Sr., Federal Way, Wash.) provided the only offense for Linfield, tallying three singles combined.

Starter Zach Brandon (Sr., Cottage Grove, Ore.) posted a modest stat line, allowing four hits and just one run through 4 1/3 innings of work. Chris Haddeland (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) came on in relief, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up three hits, two earned runs and three walks. The two combined for just two strikeouts.

COMING UP: Linfield and Lewis-Clark State face off twice more this weekend with single games Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., followed by the finale Sunday, also at 1.
