For the third time in four years, Linfield College will serve as one of eight regional host sites for NCAA Division III baseball playoffs.
The multi-team regional tournament will take place May 16-20 at Linfield’s Roy Helser Field. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Finals, May 25-29, in Appleton, Wis.
Linfield also served as host of the regional playoffs during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
“We are honored to be able to host this regional and again showcase the college and our fine facilities,” said Linfield director of athletics Scott Carnahan. “We received a lot of positive comments from players and coaches about the job we have done hosting the regional in the past. We plan to provide the same level of service and amenities.”
The Division III regional tournament will be staged in McMinnville regardless of whether Linfield’s baseball team is competing. The Wildcats still must earn an invitation, either through the automatic berth awarded to the Northwest Conference champion, or as one of several at-large representatives. Last spring, Linfield earned the automatic berth from the NWC and reached the championship game of the Abilene (Texas) Regional.
In 2010, Linfield won its own NCAA regional tournament and advanced to the NCAA Finals in Appleton, Wis. The Wildcats placed third in the nation that season.
Three seasons ago, Linfield won the NWC title and competed in the regional playoffs in Moline, Ill. The Wildcats won that tournament also, advancing to the eight-team NCAA Finals in Appleton, Wis., where they won two of four games there to place fifth nationally.
