Boxers cut Wildcats down to size

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Taking no prisoners, Pacific’s streaking men’s tennis team put together a solid performance from top to bottom in fashioning a 9-0 victory over Linfield Thursday afternoon inside Rutschman Fieldhouse.

With a fifth victory in its last six matches, Pacific earned its third shutout victory of a Northwest Conference opponent this season. The Boxers improved to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the NWC. The Wildcats dipped to 2-6 and 2-5 in league action.

The tightest battle of the day was waged at No. 3 singles, where Luke Kleinman took Pacific’s Eric Furuya to a third set before falling 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

The Boxers won in straight sets at each of the remaining five singles flights. Troy Zuroske slid past Linfield’s Cody Levien at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, and Brandon Schlack topped Zach Lyons 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Giancario Battaglia got past Wildcats freshman Micah Roos (Sr., Port Angeles, Wash.)e, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 5 singles, Scott Kawamura defeated Ben Brewer (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) 6-2, 6-0 and Kolin Wong completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Linfield’s Ian Rapport at No. 6.

In doubles play, Lyons and Levien were victims of a second straight defeat after opening the season at 6-0. The two Wildcats were bumped off by the Pacific tandem of Zuroske and Battaglia 8-5 at No. 1. Wong and Kawamura scored an 8-4 win over Roos and Kleinman at No. 2 and Furuya and Schlack prevailed 8-3 over Brewer and Joel Trousdale (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) 8-3.

AHEAD: Linfield locks horns with NWC foe Whitworth Saturday night in Spokane, Wash. The ‘Cats then embark on a five-match swing though east Texas and northwestern Louisiana where they’ll face Centenary, Texas-Tyler, Trinity, Hardin-Simmons and LeTourneau.
