McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Cameron Bushey successfully converted a penalty kick to give the league-leading Whitworth Pirates a 1-0 win over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the Linfield soccer field.
From the beginning, Whitworth outshot Linfield by a wide margin. Over the first 45 minutes, the Pirates took 10 shots to Linfield’s four. Wildcat goalie Cody Tipton made six spectacular saves to keep the Pirates off the board for most of the first half.
The match remained scoreless until the 28th minute, when a foul in the goal box led to a penalty kick for the Pirates. Bushey shot left while Tipton dove right, providing the game’s first and only score and putting Whitworth in the lead 1-0.
Linfield defenders Wil Hiles, Kyle Brouse, and Brad Dupea continued to shine in the second half, but the Wildcat offense could not make a move on the other end of the field. Linfield put up just two shots during final period. Whitworth, meanwhile, kept the pressure on, attempting 13 shots in the second half.
Overall, Whitworth shot 23 times, with four attempts from Bushey alone, to Linfield’s six.
Defensively for the Bucs, goalkeeper Brian Sherpe made two saves, one in each half, to earn the win. Tipton finished with 12 saves.
Whitworth remains in a three-way tie for first place atop the Northwest Conference standings with a 5-1 league record and 7-2-1 overall mark. Linfield remains winless in conference action at 1-7-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the NWC.
