ESTACADA, Ore. – Despite stifling heat and a moderately hilly course, the Linfield’s men’s and women’s cross country squads made strong showings Saturday, placing second and third respectively, at the Lewis & Clark Open at scenic McIver State Park.

Concordia of Portland claimed most of the top honors on the men’s side, earning five of the top eight places. Linfield’s men placed second in the among six teams. The Wildcat women were third in a five-team race.

Linfield’s Scott Gage, recognized recently as Northwest Conference Runner of the Week, finished first among Linfield’s runners and sixth overall in 26 minutes, 6 seconds. Along with teammates Arian Anderson and Joe Gladow, the Wildcats claimed three of the top eight slots in the men’s eight-kilometer race.

Anderson was hot on Gage’s heels, finishing one position back in 26:18. Gladow was eighth overall, crossing the finish line in 26:25. Also turning in top-25 finishes for Linfield were freshman Calvin Howell, 16th overall in 27:09, and senior Eric Weinbender, 22nd in 27:26.

Unattached athlete Cordero Cisneros topped the 56-man field in 25:11.

In the women’s six-kilometer race, junior Nelly Evans was sixth in a race of 57 competitors in 23:07, two slots ahead of Wildcats senior Shanna Peaden, who was ninth in 23:23.

Two Linfield freshmen turned in notable performances. Audrey Lichten (Sr., Sequim, Wash.) was 11th in 23:35 while Madison Trowbridge captured 15th place in 23:54. Hannah Greider turned in a top-20 performance, taking 19th place in 24:18.
