INDIANAPOLIS – Three Linfield female athletes have been invited to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet runs Thursday through Saturday at Selby Field & George Gauthier Track on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

The Wildcat contingent boasts two Northwest Conference champions, both of which hold school records in their respective events, and one runner-up. All three are competing in the field events.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” said head coach Travis Olson. “Their hard work has paid off.”

Catherine Street is an automatic qualifier in the pole vault and enters the national meet leading the field with a career-best mark of 13 feet, 5½ inches (4.10m). Her closest competitor, 2011 national indoor champion Abigail Schaffer of Moravian, is 1½ inches back. In total, just three entrants have cleared the bar above 13 feet this season.

This is Street’s third appearance at the outdoor meet. The Linfield record holder took third as a freshman in 2009, but failed to record a mark last year. The disappointment of that sophomore performance has undoubtedly fueled her desire for a national title, which she could finally realize in this third try.

“I fully expect her to vie for a national championship,” Olson said. “That’s her goal, and she’s ready to do it.”

Street will be joined by two freshmen that made the national field with provisional qualifying marks that were high enough to warrant invitations.

Anna LaBeaume (Sr., Sequim, Wash.) is prepared to compete in the shot put. The NWC champion is tied for the 14th-best throw in the nation this year with a heave of 44 feet, 9½ inches (13.65m).

In just her first collegiate season, LaBeaume has already recorded the third-best mark in Linfield history in the shot put. She also competed in the discus and hammer throws, but did not qualify for nationals in either event.

Rounding out the field of Wildcat competitors is Kate Shear (Sr., Knappa, Ore.), who enters the meet with the fifth-best javelin throw among all participants at 141 feet, 7 inches(43.16m).

Shear appears to be peaking at the right time. She threw a career-best and set the Linfield record for her event at the last regular-season meet at George Fox on May 20. A month prior, Shear was the runner-up at the NWC championships with a throw of 137 feet, 5 inches.

According to seed marks, Street and Shear are the only two Wildcats expected to place in the Top-8, yet Olson said he would not be surprised if all three of his athletes achieve All-American status.

A total of 796 participants – 398 women and 398 men – are slated compete in the championships. Illinois Wesleyan is the defending women's team champion and North Central (Ill.) won the men's team title in 2010.
