Wildcats hold on to second place

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Wildcats earned a resounding victory in women’s tennis, defeating visiting Puget Sound 8-1 Friday evening at the Linfield Tennis Center.

With the win, the ‘Cats (9-4, 7-1 NWC) maintain their second-place standing in the Northwest Conference, trailing undefeated Whitworth. Meanwhile, the Loggers (5-8, 2-5 NWC) are now tied for sixth place with Lewis & Clark.

Linfield swept all six singles flights and two of three doubles matches en route to the win.

Abby Olbrich won the top singles flight over Maddison Holtz by a score of 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 player Sophie Larson topped Jenna Gerdsen 6-2, 6-4 and Lexi Thomas edged Logan Thompson 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Caroline Brigham improved to 8-2 on the season, defeating Ada Yu 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles match. Sarah Click, fresh off her 40th career singles win, kept things rolling with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marissa Friedman. Rounding out singles action was Sarah Watanabe, who earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Nina Ho.

Earlier in the match, Linfield won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights, both by wide margins.

Click and Olbrich toppled Holtz and Yu 8-0, and Thomas and Kiana Nip blanked Ho and Gerdsen 8-0.

The Loggers earned their sole match point with a win at the No. 2 doubles slot, as Friedman and Thompson defeated Larson and Brigham 8-4.

NEXT: Linfield travels just a few miles north to take on the George Fox Bruins in a 10 a.m. matchup Saturday morning.
