Wildcats can't sustain first-half lead, fall 64-49

NEWBERG, Ore. - Trailing by three points at halftime, George Fox regrouped and held Linfield to 22.6 percent shooting in the second half on its way to a 64-49 win Saturday evening at the Wheeler Sports Center.

With the win the Bruins run their record to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in Northwest Conference play. The loss drops the Wildcats to 9-7 on the season and 4-4 in the NWC.

After falling behind 12-6 to open the game, Linfield answered back with six-straight points, the last basket coming on a Brynna Fuller 3-pointer at the 13:38 mark of the first half.

The ‘Cats built their lead to 30-24 with 2:00 remaining in the half. With time winding down, Keisha Gordon cut the Linfield lead in half with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Coming out of the break it was all George Fox.

The Bruins ran away with the game after regaining the lead on a Gordon free throw with 16:40 remaining. Gordon’s free throw proved to be the third point of what would develop into a 22-7 George Fox run over the ensuing 10:24.

George Fox’s lead would swell to as many as 18, before finally closing out Linfield by a 15-point margin. The Wildcats, who shot just 28.1 percent for the game, generated a 22.6 percent output from the floor in the second half.

Hannah Munger led the Bruins with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Gordon topped all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

With the two teams nearly even in all statistical categories expect field goal percentage, the Bruins held a sizeable advantage on the glass. George Fox outrebounded Linfield 50-39, while hauling down 15 offensive rebounds.

Owens paced the Wildcats with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

NEXT: Linfield travels to Whitworth Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
