Biography
Gary Gutierrez is in his 15th season as head coach of the Linfield swimming program. He guided the Linfield men to the Northwest Conference championship during his first season in 1998-99. He was named NWC women's coach of the year in 2002 and again in 2003. He was also honored as the NWC men's coach of the year in 2005 and 2007.
His experience includes a mixture of club coaching and international experience. Prior to joining the staff at Linfield, he directed the Canby Swim Club for two years and for six years was the head coach and aquatics director of the St. Croix Swimming Association on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Gutierrez was the U.S. Virgin Islands national team coach for six years. He coached at the Central America Games, the Caribbean Games, the 1991 Pan American Games and the 1992 Olympics Games in Barcelona. As a club-team coach, he directed 10 athletes to competition at the U.S. Senior level, four of whom qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Another 25 athletes under his tutelage competed at the U.S. Junior championship level.
A 1975 graduate of the University of Oregon, Gutierrez received a bachelor's degree in romance languages. He completed requirements for a second major in physical education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1979.
