He began his career with Tillamook High School, serving first as the junior varsity coach before taking over the reins of the varsity program. Ackerman then coached three sports (baseball, football and basketball) at Yamhill-Carlton before returning to his alma mater, Glencoe, to serve as a junior varsity coach with the same three athletic programs.
While coaching, Ackerman also worked as a classroom aide, specifically with the special education departments. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Linfield and has hopes of becoming a teacher. Ackerman resides in Forest Grove with his wife, Melissa, and children Abigail and Jackson.
