First CLAS (Community, Leadership, Action & Service) is a week-long service-learning and leadership pre-orientation program for incoming first-year students. As a First CLAS participant, you will serve with local non-profits throughout the week, learn about important campus and community resources, gain valuable leadership skills, and discover what McMinnville and Linfield have to offer. When you’re not busy serving, you will have plenty of opportunities to connect with your fellow participants, be mentored by your student leaders, settle into campus, and more. After the week of service, you will have the opportunity to lead other first-year students for the Taste of Service event, learn about the Alternative Spring Break program, and continue to volunteer for leadership roles on campus!
The goal of the First CLAS program is to empower those new to the Linfield community to "hit the ground running." By coming to campus just six days earlier, you will have a unique opportunity to:
All before most of your peers even set foot on campus!
Qualifications: Anyone who has been accepted and is planning to attend Linfield College as a first-year student in the Fall is encouraged to apply; however, due to limited space, we are unable to accept all applicants. No experience in community service is necessary! We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic about Linfield and the community, interested in becoming leaders on campus, open to new ideas and experiences, and willing to volunteer (Please note: community service projects may entail manual labor. Reasonable accommodations can be arranged with advanced notification).
Application deadline: JULY 8, 2016
What does the program cost?
To participate, only a $50 deposit to hold your spot is required. All other expenses are covered! This includes housing, three meals a day, transportation during the program, and all program activities. Scholarships are available for students with financial need. If you are accepted, you will be notified of where to send your deposit.
How can I get a scholarship application?
Request an application from CES Director Joni (email@example.com); scholarship applications are due when program applications are due, July 8.
Where will participants live during the week?
Students will move directly into their Fall housing assignment on that first Friday of the program. Students will not have to move again.
When will applicants be notified?
Applicants will be notified July 22 as to whether they have been accepted into the program or not. Look for an e-mail from Joni Tonn, the Director of Community Engagement and Service: firstname.lastname@example.org. At that time, we will let you know where to send your deposit, as well as provide you with a packing list, when to arrive, and many more details. Please do not make your travel arrangements prior to receiving notification of your acceptance.
I am an athlete, can I apply to participate?
New students who are trying out for athletics for fall sports at Linfield are not able to participate in this program due to conflicting schedules.
Does applying to the program mean that I will be accepted as a First CLAS participant?
Due to the program's limited space at community partner service sites, not all applicants may be accepted.
Are there other opportunities to get involved at Linfield regardless of my acceptance into First CLAS?
Absolutely! Linfield is full of wonderful leadership and service opportunities. We hope you will take advantage of the ones that interest you. To see a few of the opportunities available, check out the following webisites:
