Academic Interests:
My principle research interests derive from the fields of personality, cross-cultural, theoretical/philosophical, and transpersonal psychology. My scholarly interests have focused on systems theory, models of self, and gender issues in psychology, as reflected in my two books: Fully Human (Prentice-Hall, 1981), concerning psychological and cultural androgyny (the integration of metaphorically masculine and feminine dimensions in personality and culture), and Metaphors of Interrelatedness (State University of New York Press, 1992), exploring systems theory as a unifying metaphor in psychology, science, and religion. I have also written and pursued interdisciplinary work integrating issues in psychology, religion, and consciousness, including most recently work on alchemy as a symbol system for human transformation. I have also published articles in interdisciplinary journals like Soundings, Listening, Contemporary Philosophy, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, and Issues in Integrative Studies.
I have presented aspects of my work at meetings of Western Psychology Association, the Association of Women in Psychology, the American Academy of Religion (e.g., Social Sciences division - Person, Culture, and Religion group), and the Lewis & Clark Gender Studies/Women's Studies Symposium. I have also been the invited speaker for lecture series, symposia, or colloquia at such universities as Washington State University, Alaska Pacific University, University of Oregon, and Reed College, and the Mary McConnell Symposium on Religion and Science, as well as a frequent guest lecturer or workshop leader in a variety of academic or community settings.
Courses Taught
I teach the Introduction to and Seminar in Personality Theory, Psychology East and West (with a cross-cultural emphasis on India, Japan, and China), Perspectives on Gender, and Psychology of Religion and Consciousness. I have also co-facilitated the Freshman Colloquium, and teach courses in the Religious Studies Department.
I am also the academic supervisor of Internships and Community Service, and coordinate placements of students in a wide variety of social agencies. Our students have an excellent reputation in the community, and nearly all majors do some kind of volunteer work and/or internships. If you have any questions concerning work in human service areas you are encouraged to contact me.
