Description: Introduction to sweep of U.S. literature from its pre-Columbian precursors through British colonial period, establishment of new nation, American Renaissance, Ages of Realism, Naturalism and Modernism, Post-World War II experimentation that have produced contemporary literary scene (including advent of postmodernism). Emphasis on themes involving nature, transformative impact of modernity, increasingly diverse chorus of voices commensurate with expansion of democratic ideals. Lecture/discussion. Prerequisites: INQS 125. Offered spring. 4 credits. (CS or US)
