DeFrees was born and raised in Hillsboro, educated at St. Mary's Academy in Portland and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Marylhurst College and a master's from the University of Oregon.
Her work has earned her fellowships in poetry from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has taught at the University of Montana and at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and studied with Karl Shapiro, Robert Fitzgerald and John Berryman. She has published seven books of poetry and two works of autobiography. For 38 years she was Sister Mary Gilbert, a Catholic nun.
