8/23/2007 Linfield to offer student community service awards

McMINNVILLE ? Four Linfield College students will have the opportunity to receive education awards in exchange for community service, thanks to a program sponsored by Oregon Campus Compact.

Linfield will choose four students to participate in the Students in Service (SIS) program, which provides education awards in return for 300 hours of service. The program is sponsored by Oregon Campus Compact, a coalition of university and college presidents who are committed to the civic purposes of higher education. Linfield has participated in the SIS program since its inception in 2004 and six students have taken part.

The program is an effort to encourage and support college students who provide service in their community, according to Jessica Wade, community service coordinator at Linfield.

?This program really embodies the mission of Linfield College,? Wade said. ?It provides a way to connect learning, life and community. By participating in the SIS program, Linfield strengthens its commitment to preparing students, not only as life-long learners, but as engaged citizens.?

As part-time AmeriCorps members, Linfield SIS participants have the opportunity to make a difference in their community, gain civic and workforce skills, and upon completion of their term of service, earn an education award of up to $2,362. Students complete their service in partnership with area schools and community-based organizations, impacting the areas of education, human needs/services, the environment, public safety and community development. Preference is given to students who have a financial need.

This year, more than 2,000 students throughout Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Alaska and Montana will participate in the SIS program. By participating, students become part of the AmeriCorps national service network that improves lives and strengthens communities throughout the United States.

Linfield College joins a network of 17 Oregon Campus Compact institutions of higher education in engaging over 200 college and university students in community service. Campus partners include Concordia University, Eastern Oregon University, Lane Community College, Linfield College, Linn-Benton Community College, Northwest Christian College, Oregon State University, Portland Community College, Portland State University, Reed College, Rogue Community College, Southern Oregon University, Southwest Oregon Community College, University of Oregon, University of Portland, Warner Pacific College and Western Oregon University.

Sign up deadline is Oct. 15. For more information about the SIS program at Linfield College, contact Wade at 503-883-2636 or
