1/12/2007 Photojournalist to present program on Iraq
McMINNVILLE ? Tony Overman, an award-winning photographer for The Olympian newspaper in Olympia, Wash., will speak about his experiences in Iraq Monday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium at Linfield College.
Overman, a 1985 graduate of Linfield, along with a reporter from the Tacoma (Wash.) News-Tribune, spent six weeks embedded with the Third Stryker Brigade based out of Fort Lewis, Wash. Overman was in both Baghdad and Mosul during his time in Iraq and went wherever his soldiers went, whether it was chasing insurgents down narrow streets or visiting local schools to hand out supplies.
He will speak about his experiences as well as show photos of his work in Iraq.
Overman is a graduate of Corvallis High School and previously worked as the photo editor at the Corvallis Gazette-Times and as a reporter and photographer at the Albany Democrat-Herald. He has been at The Olympian since 1997. In 1994 and in 2005 he was named Regional Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association. He's won first place for photography in the Best of Gannett twice and second place three times and has received regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
