Both events are free and open to the public.
Ron Saxton, Republican gubernatorial candidate, will speak on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Ice Auditorium. His visit, sponsored by the Linfield College Republicans, will include brief remarks and a question and answer session.
A debate featuring candidates for the 24th House District representative position will be held Friday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. in Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall. Candidates invited include Salvador Peralta, Democrat; Donna Nelson, Republican; and David Terry, Libertarian. The debate will be moderated by David Gutterman, assistant professor of political science, and will be broadcast live on KSLC 90.3 FM. It is sponsored by the Linfield College Democrats, the Linfield College Republicans and KSLC radio station.
The events have been energized and organized by Linfield students, according to Nancy Cornwell, associate professor of mass communication.
"The effort students put into creating these opportunities for the community to engage in an open dialogue about the future of Oregon is very impressive," Cornwell said. "It is important for Linfield to provide a venue for discussion of important issues that face our community. There have been limited opportunities when our state representative candidates have come together to talk in a forum free and open to the public."
Erin Edelen, a senior and president of the Linfield College Republicans, hopes the events will help to educate others about issues and candidates.
"We hope that by doing this we will help people to make an educated vote come Election Day," she said.
