1/31/2002 Linfield fall commencement is Dec. 16

McMINNVILLE -- A total of 100 candidates for degrees will be presented at fall commencement exercises Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium at Linfield College.

David Groff, associate vice president for academic affairs and director of the Portland Campus, will present the commencement address, "America: Love It, But With Your Eyes Wide Open." David Massey, Linfield chaplain, will present the invocation and Richard Ice, chair of the Board of Trustees, will give the benediction.

Groff graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California, Davis. He has a master's and Ph.D. in African history from Stanford University. Prior to working on his graduate degrees he spent three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Niger in West Africa, where he managed an agricultural marketing cooperative and an adult literacy program. In 1974-75 he conducted archival and field research in Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal, France, and England on the development of commercial agriculture in colonial Ivory Coast. Prior to joining the staff at Linfield, he taught history at Reed College and later served as dean of students.

He came to Linfield in 1987 as assistant director of the Division of Continuing Education and the Portland advisor in the Adult Degree Program. In 1988 he was appointed part-time director of the Portland Campus and became full-time director in 1993. He was named associate vice president for academic affairs/director of the Portland Campus in 1996. He remains an active classroom teacher, having taught on the Portland and McMinnville Campuses and in the Adult Degree Program. He will lead a travel course to Ghana in West Africa in January.
