In 2003, the Three Gorges Dam opened and a body of water the length of Lake Superior began to form, inundating 360 miles of China?s Yangtze River valley. On eight three-week trips between 2000 and 2003, Butler explored the Yangtze River with a Chinese guide. Her photographs form a record of the land, the human environment, and the people before, during and after these changes. The talk will be based on her exhibit currently on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.
The program, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Linfield International Programs office, the Northwest China Council and the Oregon Council for the Humanities. For more information, call 503-883-2222.
