The day-long conference, "Diverse Voices: A Unified Message," will feature a series of workshops and sessions to promote culturally responsive pedagogy. The interactive sessions will allow participants to exchange ideas and create a plan of action to promote academic success for all students.
Although registration for the conference is closed, the public is invited to attend the morning session, "Classroom to Community and Back: Culturally Responsive Standards-Based Teaching," held from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Melrose Auditorium. This session is free and open to the public. Facilitators from the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, along with a panel of statewide multicultural educators, will discuss effective strategies being used in Northwest classrooms.
This is the first conference for Oregon?s NAME chapter. The event exhibits Oregon?s strong commitment to promoting cultural competency, said Jioanna Carjuzaa, Linfield associate professor of education and Oregon NAME president.
"The number of non-native English speakers in Oregon classrooms has increased more than 400 percent in the past 10 years," Carjuzaa said. "We need to prepare our teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students."
NAME is made up of educators from preschool through higher education and representatives from business and communities around the world. The organization supports issues of educational equity and social justice in schools.
