The master class will feature three current Linfield students including freshman mezzo-soprano Dorothy Connor, junior baritone Kelly Bechtel and senior tenor Aaron Krause. Also featured will be Ada Hunter, McMinnville soprano; John Paul Bierly and Janet Bell, both 2002 Linfield graduates; and Lance Ferguson, Portland professional tenor. The collaborative pianist is Debi Huddleston, Linfield staff accompanist.
Lucas has been the chorus master for the Portland Opera for the past 15 years, and assistant conductor since 1998. After graduating from the Eastman School with a bachelors and masters degree in piano, she began opera pursuits in the mid-1970s, and worked for the Des Moines, Wolftrap, Lake George, Long Beach and Glimmerglass opera summer companies. She ran the Young Artists Program for Glimmerglass in 1997. She has played and conducted for several Columbia Artists Community Concert tours including the "Barber of Seville." In 1986, she was appointed to the opera department faculty of Boston University. Since joining Portland Opera, Lucas has conducted two main stage productions "Cosi fan tutte" and "Lucia di Lammermoor."
"The visit is a wonderful opportunity for our students to be taught and hopefully inspired by a professional who is delivering on a weekly basis with her musical talents in the professional world," said Gwen Leonard, Linfield professor of music.
The master class is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Linfield College Academic Affairs and the Linfield Music Department. For more information, call the Music Department at 503-883-2275.
