1/9/2004 Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration planned at Linfield
McMINNVILLE ? "Before Martin, there was Rosa" will be presented Monday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m., in Melrose Auditorium in conjunction with the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Linfield College.
Shandra L. Terry, an award-winning motivational speaker, will present a re-enactment of the story of Rosa Parks, a black woman who launched the Montgomery bus boycott in December 1955 when she took a seat near the front of the city bus instead of standing in the back.
Terry, who is also the president of Standing Ovations, Inc., in Vancouver, Wash., has presented her Rosa Parks program nationally and has received national awards from both the Elks and Toastmasters International, Inc. She has made special appearances featuring her works of poetry and portryyals and literary works of past and present African American women to audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest. Her keynote speeches center around personal development, motivation, change, leadership, American history, diversity and success. Her background includes service as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., past vice chairperson of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and a member of Toastmaters International, NAACP and the National Urban League. She is a 1993 graduate of the Unviersity of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
