The tournament, sponsored by Linfield, is one of the oldest intercollegiate tournaments in the Northwest and honors Mahaffey for his pioneering efforts with forensics in the Northwest and the nation. Mahaffey taught at Linfield from 1928-1970. The tournament is sponsored by the Linfield Forensics Program, the Department of Theatre and Communication Arts and the Oregon Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta honorary. It is a National Parliamentary Debate Association sanctioned tournament for 2002-2003.
The tournament will offer novice, junior and senior division parliamentary debate and individual events. Individual categories will include informative speaking, extemporaneous speaking, after-dinner speaking, prose interpretation, dramatic duo interpretation, persuasive speaking, impromptu speaking, communication analysis, program oral interpretation, dramatic interpretation and poetry interpretation.
