3/4/2009 Poetry reading set at Linfield
McMINNVILLE – Award-winning author Yusef Komunyakaa will present a poetry reading Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield College.
Komunyakaa, a professor in the Creative Writing Program at New York University, is the author of 14 books of verse. The most recent, “Warhorses,” was published in 2008. His subject matter ranges from the African-American experience through rural Southern life before civil rights and his experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War.
In 1994, Komunyakaa received the Pulitzer Prize and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for “NeonVernacular: New and Selected Poems.” Other recognitions include the San Francisco Poetry Prize, the 2001 Ruth Lily Poetry Prize and the 2007 Louisiana Writer Award. He has also taught at Indiana University and Princeton University. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado Springs and an M.A. and M.F.A. in creative writing from Colorado State University and the University of California, Irvine, respectively.
Josef Jarab, Renshaw scholar at Linfield College and translator of Komunyakaa's work into the Czech language, will introduce the author.
