1/12/2009 Linfield College assists students facing cuts in Oregon Opportunity Grants

McMINNVILLE -- In response to announced cuts in the Oregon Opportunity Grants, Linfield College is launching a fundraising effort to raise more than $32,000 to cover the financial aid shortfall of some 400 Linfield students.

The Oregon Opportunity Grants are awarded to some of Oregon's neediest students, regardless of whether they attend public or private colleges. Even the smallest cuts in funding are critical for these students and could result in their withdrawal from college. Letters have been sent to Linfield students and donors of the institution are being contacted via letters and electronic newsletters, asking for additional support to ensure these students can remain in college. Linfield has the largest number of Oregon Opportunity Grant recipients of all of Oregon's private colleges.

Representatives from Linfield’s Office of Financial Aid meet regularly with students facing financial issues. All college employees are especially attuned this academic year to financial concerns and students are urged to meet with a financial aid administrator about possible solutions. Prompt responses to student concerns have allowed a number of students to continue enrollment even with family financial crises.

This is not the first time the Linfield community has stepped up to help students. A funding crisis in the state of Oregon in the fall of 2002 resulted in major cuts to Oregon Opportunity Grants. Linfield trustees, alumni, faculty and staff donated $90,000 to cover cuts in financial aid to 200 Linfield students, which ensured that they would be able to continue their education.
