McMINNVILLE – Portland author Lee Montgomery will present a reading Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield College. Montgomery will read from "We Americans," a novel in progress, or from "Whose World Is This," a collection of short stories. Montgomery is the author of "Whose World Is This" and "The Things Between Us," a memoir of her mother's alcoholism, which won the Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction in 2007. Montgomery also received the John Simmons Iowa Short Fiction Award for "Whose World Is This" in 2007, and the collection is currently a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. "Things Between Us" is the story of Montgomery's childhood in New England with her father, newly diagnosed with stomach cancer, and her mother, an alcoholic. The memoir describes Montgomery as the youngest child growing up in a dysfunctional family. With her siblings being considerably older, Montgomery felt as if she were an only child dealing with the problems of her family. Montgomery is the executive editor of Tin House Magazine and the editorial director of Tin House Books. The reading, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Linfield English Department and Friends of Nicholson Library. For more information, call Susan Barnes Whyte at 503-883-2517.
