Nursing

Resource Center

The Nursing Learning Resource Center (NLRC) is located in Peterson Hall on the Portland Campus. Twelve hospital beds set the stage for student nurses to learn, practice and refine nursing skills in a friendly environment. A full time NLRC Coordinator, who is a Registered Nurse, is available during scheduled labs as well as by appointment for one on one teaching.

Equipment

The center is equipped with six life sized mannequins for simulated patient care. IV training arms, catheterization models, a central intravenous training model named "Chester Chest", pediatric sized mannequins and other training models are utilized to enhance learning.

Methodology

Students work in clinical groups with their faculty instructor in patient care simulation scenarios which integrate technical skills as well as critical thinking exercises.

Computer access in the lab allows students and faculty to use CD-ROM programs to hone assessment skills. CD-ROMs are available on topics such as EKG Interpretation, Breath Sounds Assessment, and Medication Dosage Calculations.

A wide assortment of supplies are provided to students for use in home visits and teaching projects. Some examples include baby scales, community health nursing bags, otoscopes, and developmental assessment tools.

Supportive environment

The Nursing Learning Resource Center is a place for students to practice skills with the Center Coordinator on an appointment basis. Additional help is available for students based on faculty referrals for specialized assistance.
