Dear Students:

Beginning with the summer 2009 term, Linfield College will cease its participation in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program. All students wishing to take a Federal Stafford Loan and/or a Federal PLUS Loan will be processed through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program. This process secures funds from the federal government through the U.S. Department of Education instead of utilizing private lenders. However, private or alternative loans will continue to be available from private lenders.

You will need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at the Direct Lending Web Site before our office can process a Stafford Loan for you for 2009-2010. Some of you may have done this through your attendance at a previous school. We would recommend that you verify with Direct Lending that you have a valid MPN on file. Loan funds cannot be requested, received or credited to your account until you take care of this responsibility.New students should attend to this as soon as soon as possible if you plan to enroll on the Portland Campus.

Some of you may be interested in consolidation and that information is available at 1-800-557-7392 or www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov. Please research this option very carefully because consolidation can extend the term of your loans and considerably increase the amount of loan principal and interest that you repay.
