Computing and Educational Media ServicesPortland Network SupportCEMS is the first point of contact for reports or questions related to network problems on the Portland campus. Linfield College's internal network operates TCP/IP over Ethernet. Most elements of the Linfield College network are managed from the McMinnville campus. On the Portland campus this includes the campus' local network switches, router, and related devices. Portland campus staff work with the college's Network Manager when needed to address local network issues. The Portland and the McMinnville campuses are connected by a pair of T1 circuits maintained by Integra Telecom. The Portland campus was wired for Ethernet in the early 1990s. A wireless network was implemented in the residential portion of Loveridge Hall in 2001. Wireless network access was extended to the entire campus by the Fall of 2006. The wireless access points are managed locally by CEMS. CEMS provides support for staff and faculty users of network clients used to access Linfield College resources. That support currently includes secure shell or secure tunnel telnet clients on Windows and Macintosh, respectively, and Outlook or Entourage for access to Linfield e-mail. We use Firefox as our primary Web browser. Internet Explorer on Windows is supported only in those cases where a specific, college-related business or support activity requires it. CEMS does not provide network client support or computer hardware or software problem-solving or repair for computer equipment not owned by the Portland campus of Linfield College. CEMS will investigate network-level issues affecting college-owned or student client computers. |
