Politics and Tragedy in Ancient Greece (IA/IS/VP)

This course is an upper-level seminar that is cross-listed in the Departments of Political Science and Theater. This class is offered as a January-term international course based in Athens, Greece.

In this course we examine the relationship between tragedy and politics in Ancient Greece. We pay particular attention to the role of the theater in Athenian society, with a focus on the function of tragic theater as a vehicle of political engagement. Through our study of Greek tragedies ? and one contemporary tragedy ? we explore the role of artistic creation in political discourse, the role of tragic theater in the development of democratic citizenship, and the interrelationship of culture and politics in both ancient and contemporary democracies. Our study of the texts and themes will be illuminated by engaging in this analysis of democracy and tragedy in Athens and the surrounding area, where will we travel to the temples, agoras, and other public spaces so central both to these tragic plays and to the development and practice of democracy.
