The summer sun is fading as the winter breeze begins to blow. The perfect sign that the time has come to begin another wildcat year. As I find myself shaking off the summer sun beams for my favorite winter coat, it becomes evident the rapid pace this year will soon undergo. It seems the enthusiastic busy buzz that Linfield student to Linfield student shares will be no exception to my daily routine. This rush, however, is one I grew familiar to even through my summer vacation. This summer I had the great privilege of working on campus for a program called Upward Bound. Through this trio program low income, first generation students are given the opportunity to strengthen not only their academic standings but learn the traits of true character.
Through my work as a tutor councilor, I was able to see the students blossom academically as well as on a personal level. This process almost instantly became more than just a summer job but another family. To have been allowed a part in creating an atmosphere where students felt they could be themselves, felt accepted, respected and cared for, is a privilege I feel incredibly grateful for. I truly believe that the benefits of this program are so that it can change lives and ultimately mold an individual to their highest potential giving them the confidence they need to succeed. Upward Bound was such a great experience for me, in fact, that I hope to be tutoring the students during this academic school year as well.
Another activity I plan to devote much of my time to is Residence Life. This year I am on staff as one of the Resident Advisors in Grover Hall. Over the summer, staff was given training which not only prepared us to do our jobs as professionals but allowed us time to get to know each other on a more personal level. From my staff members I have already seen much dedication and passion to make Linfield not just a school but a caring community. Endless hours are devoted for the benefit of our students and I know that because of this hard work and effort, this will be another great year!
