Linfield College’s European Studies/German Major and Minor
The European Studies/German Major and Minor aim to foster in students the integrative perspective of a range of academic disciplines from the arts and humanities and the social sciences. Central to the ES/G program are cooperation and collaboration among departments, the insistence on a high level of German language proficiency, a significant study abroad experience (at least one semester), and the opportunity for an internship abroad.
MLG courses at all levels inform students about private and public life in the relevant European countries, including cultural behavior patterns, literature and the arts, social relationships, the environment, and history and traditions. Specialized courses dealing with history, political systems, and cultural relations between the United States and German-speaking countries can be chosen from other academic units of the college—for example, the departments of art and music in the humanities and history and political science in the social sciences.

Resources central to teaching and learning in ES/G include current sources of information about German-speaking countries, such as local, national, and international newspapers and magazines, lectures, film and TV presentations (e.g. Deutsche Welle), library holdings, and electronic media. The addition of the rich resource base in social sciences now in the Linfield library provides for ES/G majors of significant depth and breadth.
