LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Outgunned and outrebounded, the Linfield Wildcats fell behind early and never recovered during a 64-51 nonconference setback to Carroll (Wis.) Monday night at the D3hoops.com Classic staged at South Point Arena.
Carroll, a NCAA Division III program from Waukesha, Wis., snapped a three-game slide to improve to 5-5. The Wildcats (2-8) dropped their sixth straight contest.
Linfield's starting lineup accounted for just 30 of 51 points. Tanner Brill dropped in 11 points and Chris Dirks had 10. Carroll shot a stellar 50 percent from the field to the Wildcats' 39 percent, including a 45-29 percent edge in the first half when the Pioneers established control in the game's opening five minutes and never relented.
Leading 24-17 at the break, Carroll shifted into high gear to start the second period, outscoring Linfield 28-3 over a 12½-minute stretch.
After Brian Nagy hit two free throws with 7:22 to play, the Pioneers' lead had reached 30 points, 52-22. The Wildcats did put together a closing run to make the score respectable. Brill and Cory Hendryx each connected on a pair of 3-pointers as the ‘Cats pumped in 26 of their 51 total points in the last 6:13.
Andrew Nottling paced Carroll with 15 points, Alex Molter connected for 13 points and five rebounds, and Kevin Hurd contributed 12 points, five rebounds and five assists for the victors. The Pioneers outrebounded the Wildcats by a 32-20 margin with four players snaring five or more boards each.
Linfield hit 10 of 24 3-point attempts, three by Brill and Ryan Cali, and two each from Hendryx and Jackson Gion. Cali pulled in a game-high eight rebounds while adding nine points off the bench for the 'Cats.
NEXT: Linfield resumes Northwest Conference play Saturday night in Tacoma, Wash., when the Wildcats face the Puget Sound Loggers in Memorial Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. with live audiocast coverage starting at 7:50.
