The features editor coordinates a staff of reporters (sometimes including a senior reporter) in covering feature stories. The features editor will be responsible for a weekly features section and will be specifically expected to:
- Write a minimum of one story per week
- Put together large, special sections or supplements, or as required
- Work with reporters to generate story ideas during weekly features desk meetings
- Coordinate at least one enterprise story per reporter per semester
- Line edit stories prior to publication to identify problems, such as libel, inaccuracy, wordiness or lack of clarity
- Assist reporters in writing and improving their work
- Become extremely familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Review style
- Ensure that all there is a variety of ideas covered in the Features section – e.g. not just the “green” movement
- Coordinate with the photo and graphics departments to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tip sheets, talking in person with the photographer or graphic artist and when appropriate, by sending reporters out with a camera
- Issue blog posts and/or Twitter alerts as necessary. If features news is breaking on a reporter’s beat but he or she is unavailable, the features editor should disseminate the news.
- Be available to line edit stories throughout the day as breaking news emerges and stories are posted to the Web site
- Advise the editor-in-chief and managing editor on issues in assigned beat areas
- Communicate to managing editor when stories fall through or coverage is changing
- Assign reporters breaking news stories, blog posts or Twitter alerts as necessary
- Meet daily deadlines and ensure reporters do as well
- Assist in the finding of features reporters
- Ensure that all features reporters are effectively utilized and receive ongoing training
- Attend required staff meetings, and schedule and lead weekly desk meetings with reporters to discuss problems and plan coverage
- Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed
- Set individual goals each semester to improve journalistic skills, and help others set goals each semester to improve their journalistic skills
- Contribute to supplements as needed
- Complete additional tasks as assigned
