Political science prof weighs in on Proposition 8 in Oregonian guest column

Professor Nicholas Buccola says that California’s Proposition 8 ruling comes down to a question of morals.

This week the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

“The central constitutional issues at stake in this case are complex,” Buccola says, “The moral issues are not. Proposition 8 is unjust.”

Buccola also made the front cover of the quarterly progressive magazine, Dissent, with an essay about abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and his guest column was published in the Baltimore Sun.

Buccola is an assistant professor of political science at Linfield College. His book, The Political Thought of Frederick Douglass, is forthcoming from New York University Press in April.
