News-Register follows alum, whose European trek inspires first novel

Caleb Kearns ’08 wrote his first book after graduation and a backpack through Europe.

He spent four months backpacking through Europe after graduating, and then sat down and wrote a novel, inspired by the people and places he visited along the way.

But A Journal Away from Life is far from being a record of his travels, says News-Register reporter Starla Pointer. Instead, it explores the journey of a father searching for answers about why his son died on a hiking trail in Italy, and the journey the son took on the way to his death.

Kearns calls the novel a mystery and a romance, with twists readers may not expect.
