Linfield ranked 84th in Washington Monthly’s 2009 college guide, which rated liberal arts schools based on their contribution to the public good. America’s best colleges, the magazine says, are those that encourage students to give back to their country.
Schools in the upper ranks emphasize student engagement in their communities, graduate greater numbers of students who go on to obtain doctoral degrees, and excel in their support of economically disadvantaged students.
According to the Monthly’s rankings, Linfield is in the top 100 schools for students who serve in the Peace Corps, and 11 percent of federal work-study funds at the college target service projects. Thirty-three percent of students receive need-based Pell grants.
