Linfield alum named best middle school principal in country

Cathy Carnahan ’73 thought she was headed to a regularly scheduled assembly at Duniway Middle School, but the event took a surprising turn.

Students, parents and staff, along with officials from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, gave Carnaham a standing ovation for being named the top middle school principal in the U.S.

“I can’t think of anyone associated with Cathy who doesn’t think she deserves it,” says Assistant Principal Dave Carlson. “She is an unbelievable person.”

More than 50 middle school principals were nominated, with one representative from each state. The award is given to principals who provide high-quality learning opportunities within their schools.

Since Carnahan arrived at Duniway, the school has seen an increase in test scores and attendance.

Along with her recognition, Carnahan will receive a $5,000 grant to promote greater learning opportunities among her students.

The award was given earlier this fall.
