Psychology Professor Tanya Tompkins is available to provide insight about the controversial issue of whether psychologists should have the legal right to prescribe medications. She has been quoted on medical websites and in national news outlets about the subject. At the regional level, she has provided leadership, testimony and newspaper editorials. She has also conducted a study of Oregon psychologists’ knowledge and opinions about this issue.
Tompkins strongly opposes letting psychologists prescribe, in part because they get too little science training. She also worries that the move would result in patients receiving more psychiatric treatment with drugs and less treatment with therapy, and would overall fail to address issues related to stigma and access.
