Dutt-Ballerstadt teaches courses about diverse and minority voices and postcolonial literature. Her book, The Postcolonial Citizen: The Intellectual Migrant, has been featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting, KBOO Community Radio, at the Portland Center for Public Humanities and others. She has published articles and poems, and given numerous presentations about migrants, dislocation and exile. Dutt-Ballerstadt’s current book projects focus on 9/11 Literatures and she is editing a collection of essays on the discourse on civility and its relationship to marginality in higher education.

Dutt-Ballerstadt is the recipient of Linfield’s Marvin and Laurie Henberg International Scholar award in recognition of her scholarly activity on international subjects.
