We look over the shoulder of someone with shoulder-length brown hair who is reading a book of poetry.Linfield University will host a pair of acclaimed writers in November as part of its Readings at the Nick series. Both events, held in the Jerald R. Nicholson Library (location), are free and open to the public.

Poet, novelist and essayist Luis Alberto Urrea will read from his most recent novel, “The House of Broken Angels” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Comedic musical ‘Firebringer’ explores climate change with laughter, crass cave art and puppets

Students are dressed as cave people and holding torches with paper flames during a dress rehearsal for Firebringer.Linfield University’s Theatre Program returns to the stage in November for the raunchy, comedic musical, “Firebringer.” Produced in collaboration with the Linfield Department of Music, this viral, indie hit hilariously depicts a tribe of cave people who discover the ability to control fire. This play may not be suitable for all audiences due to adult language and is recommended for ages 13 and older. Please note that fog and haze will be used.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 10, 11, 12, 17 and 18, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 in Linfield’s Marshall Theatre. Tickets are $15 for full price; $13 for seniors (62+) and Linfield employees (two tickets per ID); and $10 for students (any school, one ticket per ID). Seating is reserved. Tickets go on sale on Oct. 26 online at linfield.edu/arts and the box office will open Nov. 8. Located in Ford Hall, box office hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. and until 7:30 p.m. on show nights. It will also be open from noon to 2 on Saturday, Nov. 19. “my hands remind me of yours/our hands,” an exhibition featuring the creative work of Rhiannon ‘Skye’ Tafoya, will be on display at the Linfield Art Gallery from Oct. 14-Nov. 18, 2022. An opening reception and artist talk, with light refreshments, is at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 in the gallery. Both the monthlong exhibition and the opening reception are free and open to the public.

Linfield University hosts two musical performances sure to delight audiences in mid-October. Linfield’s vocal ensembles perform at the Fall Choral Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, and the Heath Quartet, a contemporary British chamber ensemble, holds a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Linfield names new vice president for finance and administration

Linfield University President Miles K. Davis announced Monday that Michael Wenz has agreed to become the university’s vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer starting Nov. 1.

Wenz has served as the executive director of university budgets at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) since 2019. Wenz holds a Ph.D. in economics from University of Illinois at Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Miami University. Continue reading

Syncopated LadiesThey have elevated the art of tap dance through “fierce footwork and female force,” and on Oct. 5, Chloe Arnold’s Syncopated Ladies will raise the roof of Linfield University’s Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium.

The Los Angeles-based female tap dance band comes to Linfield for a one-night-only performance at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. “A Night with Syncopated Ladies” will feature a 30-minute tap performance followed by a 30-minute talkback session. Continue reading

Linfield University’s 103rd theatrical season opens with Leanna Keyes’ “Doctor Voynich and Her Children,” Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Combining theatrical history and a prediction for the U.S., “Doctor Voynich and Her Children” draws from Bertolt Brecht’s foundational play “Mother Courage and Her Children” and explores women’s rights in a post–apocalyptic United States. This play may not be suitable for all audiences due to mature themes and language. Recommended for ages 16 and older.
